+ `parser.go/parse()` also does updating. back to square one.
+ we need to extract the reusable behavior: scanning.
+ inflexible:
+ adding a filter is hard. needs to change the `scan()` code.
+ adding a grouper is also hard. domain grouping is hardcoded.
